  • Flights of Ink: A Bird mobile Workshop (Age 8+) – Easter Holiday Workshops

Southern Maltings Kibes Lane, Ware, England, United Kingdom

Flights of Ink: a Bird Mobile Workshop. Step into the flow of Indian ink and let your creativity take flight. This session focuses on the deep, velvety tones of Indian ink and the meditative process of bringing paper birds to life. The experience: Ink & Pattern: We begin with the art of mark-making. You will explore the fluid nature of Indian ink to create contemporary patterns on heavy watercolour paper, moving from deep midnight blacks to soft, misty greys. Sculpting Flight: From these patterned sheets, you will use templates to cut out your birds. Each form is designed to capture the essence of a bird in mid-air, turning your two-dimensional designs into a soaring flock. Suspended Magic: Finally, your creations will be assembled into a kinetic mobile that catches every breeze and brings a sense of moving art into your home. No experience is needed—just a willingness to get a little inky and enjoy the process of slowing down. Keeda says “I have a true passion and love for birds. They are the main influence in all of my personal artwork, whether I’m drawing, painting or experimenting in different mediums. I love capturing the little characteristics in their quiet still moments and in their flitting and graceful movements. In this workshop, my hope is to share that passion and capture their delicate forms in motion". Keeda is a popular tutor to Southern Maltings, running some delightful fully booked workshops in 2025. • Creative Marbling Techniques (8+) – Easter Holiday Workshops

Southern Maltings Kibes Lane, Ware, England, United Kingdom

Creative Marbling Techniques - Join us for a new workshop with Anna from Marbling Magpie. You will spend two hours learning all about marbling on paper from expert marbler Anna. This will include practical demonstrations of various marbling techniques and then practise of at least 4 different patterns using tools such as combs and sticks, in a great variety of colours. Each attendee will make approximately 8 marbled sheets of paper each, to take home at the end of the day when dry or use in the afternoon session. For all those who have had a marbling taster with Anna at our markets, or in the February Half Term, this is an opportunity to really take a deep dive in exploring and understanding this beautiful craft. What is marbling? In essence marbling is the art of applying paint to water then transferring it to a surface. It is believed it began in the far east, Japan or China, 1000 years ago, with its hypnotism and beauty gradually captivating and inspiring cultures westward through the ages. Every nation who learned its beauty breathed their own interpretation into it. As with learning anything, you start at the beginning. Marbling at a beginners level is very free and pleasing, the more you do it the more possibilities you see and the more skills you learn. I often hold workshops and lessons in marbling and am always thrilled to see the happy look on the students face when a beautiful pattern is revealed. Being a self taught marbler there are many things you can't learn from books so its been 15 years of trials and errors.... and more errors. But the bonus of being self taught is that you stumble upon new techniques and I love to experiment and push the boundaries. This workshop is designed for children and teens aged 8+ and all materials will be provided. Just bring your creativity and enthusiasm, and we’ll take care of the rest! This is a drop off workshop with our DBS certified tutor with a maximum of 12 students. The workshop will run from 10am – 12pm on Thursday 9th April and is costed at £20. Morning and Afternoon Workshops can be booked separately, but if you book this workshop in a combined ticket together with Anna's Marbled Collage Workshop then you will get a £5 discount and the kids can do art all day!
