Mandala Incense Stick Holder Painting Workshop – Discover the calming and creative world of mandala art in this relaxing painting workshop with local mandala artist Rekha Gopinath.
In this small-group session, you will decorate your own wooden incense stick holder using intricate mandala-inspired designs and vibrant acrylic paints. Rekha will begin with a gentle introduction to the history and meaning of mandala art, sharing how this ancient practice has been used across cultures as a symbol of balance, unity and mindfulness.
You will learn simple painting techniques and pattern-building methods before creating your own unique design. Whether you choose bold colours, delicate details or a more minimalist approach, there will be plenty of guidance and creative freedom to help you personalise your piece.
This workshop is designed to be both creative and calming, offering an opportunity to slow down, focus, and enjoy the meditative rhythm of mandala making. No previous experience is needed, making it perfect for beginners as well as those who already enjoy arts and crafts.
At the end of the session, you’ll leave with a beautifully hand-painted incense stick holder to enjoy at home or give as a thoughtful handmade gift.

About the Tutor: Rekha Gopinath
Rekha Gopinath is a mandala artist whose work celebrates the beauty of symmetry, colour and mindful creativity.
Mandala art is rooted in ancient traditions found across Hindu, Buddhist and Indigenous cultures, representing wholeness, harmony and the cosmos. The word mandala comes from Sanskrit, meaning “circle”, and this sense of balance and connection sits at the heart of Rekha’s work.
Each of Rekha’s pieces is hand-drawn, beginning from a single central point and growing outward through layers of intricate geometric patterns. Inspired by nature, sacred geometry and the meditative process itself, her artwork combines fine-line detail with vibrant colour to create designs that are both visually striking and deeply calming.
For Rekha, creating mandalas is as much about the journey as the finished piece – an opportunity to practise patience, focus and being present in the moment. Through her workshops, she enjoys sharing these techniques and helping others discover the joy and mindfulness that mandala art can bring.
The workshop will run from 2pm -4pm on Sunday 6th September and is costed at £22.50. The workshop is suitable for adults and young adults from age 12+. The workshop has a maximum of 4 attendees.
The workshop will take place in our Downstairs Function Space, surrounded by the artwork of the Open Studio Exhibition, with access via our SMart cafe at the East End of Southern Maltings.
Southern Maltings is the trading name of Ware Arts Centre Limited and is a registered charity (Registered charity no. 276998).
